Dishing Out the Real Hardknocks!

When you hear the name Hardkncoks Fighting Championships you think of the best MMA athlete's in Calgary. It is a little known fact that the show is largely dominated by Calgary gyms, there is one school that strikes fear in its competition. This school is not from Calgary, but from Lethbridge. The Progressive Fighting Academy has competed in 4 of the past 7 shows and has dominated the competition.

PFA has produced huge wins during those 4 shows, but the two sweetest victories were the last two. Derek Boyle's victory over the undefeated Aaron Armstrong was nothing less than spectacular. Boyle and Armstrong fought 3 rounds which could have headlined any show in Canada. Boyle came out with the win after delivering a devastating body shot to Armstrong.

The other PFA fighter to take to the cage with 1 win and 0 losses was Jesse Dayrider. Dayrider stepped into the cage with Legends MMA athlete Jeremy Edwards. Dayrdier proved to have over all superb stand up and ground game. Dayrider beat the Edmonton athlete by submission at 1:49 of the second round.

The previous fights are as follows:

Harknocks 5- January 30, 2010
Jarod Milko (PFA) defeats Mark Morales of Dynamic MMA

New Fight Force Welter Weight Champion

On June 12th, in Kalispell Montana, PFA athlete Jarod "the Milkman" Milko became the gym's 7th North American Champion. The new Welter weight title holder beat hometown athlete Will Barnhardt of Straight Blast Gym out of Kalispell. Winning the Fight Force Welter Weight Title was no easy task. Not only did Milko have to battle against an extremely talented opponent in Barnhardt, but he was fighting in the lion’s den.

Will Barnhardt, is a blue belt under Travis Davison. Travis is the Straight Blast Gym Midwest representative and a BJJ black Belt under Matt Thorton. Naturally, you'd expect Milko's game plan to not be taken down and keep it standing.

"Our game plan was simple, control, control, control” said coach Wall. “Wheather Jarod was standing or on the ground the goal of the fight was to control."

Jarod Milko & Coach,
Brad Wall

Round one started off with Milko and Barnhardt throwing punches at each other and neither one really gaining an advantage in the boxing department. Milko was able to land several hard cut kicks to Barnhardt's thighs forcing him to clinch up with Milko. Milko then controlled the clinch landing small knees to the thighs which seemed to hurt Barnhardt. Will knew it was time to change things up and proceeded in taking Milko to the ground. The corwd roared and chant's from Will's corner yelled "It's all over,” as Barnhardt jump from one side of Milko's body to the other. It looked like the lion had his next victim as Barnhardt took Milko's back and seemed seconds away from forcing Milko to tap.

When asked, Milko stated, "this is something I've repped out a thousand times with much heavier fighters, like training partner Chase Degenhardt." Round one came to an end as Milko was able to turn in Brnhardt's guard and work some punches.

Round one was done it seemed like it was in Barnhardt's favor.

Round two began with Milko controlling the stand up landing more cut kicks and some more hard knee's in the clinch. This time when Will went for the takedown Jarod used his Judo experience to toss Barnhardt forcing him on his back. From there Barnhardt was forced to work off his back and defend punches. The game plan was taking affect as Milko mixed up a beautiful combination of ground and pound with jui jitsu. Milko had the opportunity to stand up several times throughout the round, but Will choose to stay on his back and try to attemp up kicks at Milko. Milko would explode raining down power flying punches onto Barnhardt. Round two came to an end and it was all Milko, as the Milkman was on delivery!

Round three started much the same as round two, Barnhardt seemed to struggle trading punches and kicks with Milko who moved in and out of range comfortably. When the time came Milko took Barnhardt down with ease. Barnhardt elected to stay on his back a majority of the round working for a triangle or arm bar. Milko seemed unfazed as he applied pressure and even passing Barnhardt's guard for the mount. Barnhardt was very skilled and was quick to pull guard. The same scenario seemed to repeat itself throughout the remainder of the third round.

When the bell rang the exhausted fighter knew he delivered his game plan and controlled the fight.

Battle at the Barn II - UPDATE

To show that you are worthy you must defeat a worthy opponent. In order to make it to the top you don’t beat tomato cans...you must beat the best. Chase Degenhardt has taken the next step n the quest of making it to the top of the MMA world. After being defeated by a tough Craig Brown in Gatineau, Quebec, Degenhardt has taken the next step on the road to the top.
Many fighters want the easy fight after a loss. They want to get back on the winning track and regain that confidence a fighter has from winning. Chase decided to take another approach after his loss. He didn’t take the easy fight, but stepped it up and took on an incredibly tough fighter in Jeremy “The Juggernaut” Hart out of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Degenhart defeated the very tough opponent in Jeremy Hart in Malta, Montana at the Battle at the Barn. Hart, a professional athlete with 7W and 1L (all seven wins by ko/tko) and more than 10 amateur fights, was more than a worthy opponent. After a stand up war with Hart, Degenhardt was able to submit Hart with a triangle choke in the first round.

The following week, Chase and his management decided he needed to step it up again. The next fighter in Chase’s sights would be Jason “Dooms” Day. Chase confirmed a fight with Jason 'Dooms' Day formerly of Lethbridge, Alberta. Day is a tough fighter who at his peak beat fighters like David Louiseau, Jonathan Goulet and Alan Belcher. Day also had several fights in the UFC and had a record of 1 win and 2 loses.

The timing was perfect, if Chase is was going to make it to the next level who better to beat than an EX-UFC athlete like Jason Day. then Degenhardt. But fate had other plans for Degenhardt. Unfortunately, three days after confirming the bout Degenhardt found out that he had broken a bone in his left hand which would mean he would be unable to fight.

"I sent Jason, a message apologizing for the misfortune" said manager Brad Wall, "Jason never responded." Unfortunately everyone lost out in this case Jason, Chase and the fans...especially the Lethbridge fans. This would have been an epic fight for Lethbridge fans who would loved to see two home town warriors go at it. Hopefully someone else can make this fight happen when both athletes’ are ready and healthy.

GARGOYLE BOYLE - CRACKED NOT BROKEN

Derek Boyle

Historically gargoyles have clung lifelessly to Gothic Architecture, but in more recent times they’ve taken on much darker roles – they’ve become protectors trained to defeat anything naive enough to face them.
Derek ‘The Gargoyle’ Boyle, 25, of the Progressive Fighting Academy is determined to prove the loss he suffered to Josh Machan of Red Deer, was pure luck. Machan defeated Boyle on April 24, in Lloydminster in front of a full house. Machan trains under UFC’s Jason “The Athlete” McDonald, and is known for having a lethal ground game.

Brad Wall is the head coach of PFA where Boyle trains and says that he expected a good fight. “Like McDonald we expected Machan to be tough on the ground. Derek was well prepared for the fight unfortunately sometimes it takes more than prep it takes a bit of luck to win fights,” says Wall.

But luck wasn’t on Boyles’ side and although Boyle had a dominating ground game and stand up game, Machan came out victorious. Boyle dominated in the first round of the fight and started the second round in with the same energy, after mounting his opponent the win seemed moments away. Machan turned the fight around suddenly by using a kimura on Boyle and rolling him.
The crowd was shocked, but nobody could have been more astonished than Boyle and Wall. Machan and McDonald have been in situations like this before and proven that Machan is not an average fighter, but deadly from any position. Machan is on a four-fight winning streak, but Boyle is adamant on a rematch and soon.

“I’ve contacted the promoter of the Evolution Fight Club as well as Machan’s coach Jason McDonald to stir up a rematch. Derek won’t be sleeping good at night until he gets a second shot at this match, he believes he should have won and will when they meet again,” says Wall
“We are hopeful that Josh and Jason will take a rematch at the next Evolution in August, but Derek will take a rematch in Red Deer the next Pure Show,” adds Wall.

TOKYO COWBOY RETURNS WITH VENGEANCE

Hidetomo Fujii

It's been roughly three years since Hidetomo Fujii took to the ring and fought in a Muay Thai event. The welterweight has focused his efforts to
becoming a complete Thai Boxer over the last few years and has become an integral part of Team PFA. Being the selfless person that he is, Hide, has also dedicated a large part of his time and efforts to help develop other athletes at PFA. Hide's desire to compete was still burning strong in his heart, but as with many fighters, life can get in the way. A combination of work, school, family and relationships can be a lot for a competitive athlete to juggle around. No matter how busy Hide became he still made time to train and help others at PFA.

The one word that would describe Hide is "Perfection". Hide trains at a higher level and with more intensity than most fighters. His commitment to perfection can be seen in his training and he desire to help others gain that same level in their own training. Many fighters who lose their first fight will pack their bags and quit training altogether or they will beg their coaches to get them in the ring as soon as possible. Either of these choices was not in Hide's character. Hide decided to learn from the fight and discover what he did wrong, and more importantly, what he did right. Hide then dedicated himself for the next three years to every little detail necessary for him to become the quality fighter that he desired to be. Hide realized that to become a top athlete he would need to dedicate a large part of his time and energy towards that goal. The dedication and efforts over the past three years paid off greatly.

On Saturday May 15, 2010, the fight fans at Helena Havoc witnessed the return of the Tokyo Cowboy. Hide is not one to take an easy fight, but always trying to push to limit. Hide, with a record of 0 wins and 1 lose, accepted a fight with a far more experienced fighter. Ryan Fuss is an tough experienced mixed martial arts fighter with a record of 8 wins and 1 loss. Toughness is nothing new to Ryan Fuss. Fuss trains at the Hel-Town Hybrid MMA school. The head trainer at Hel-Town is Brett Hamil, who is also the the personal trainer of UFC former light heavyweight champ Chuck Liddell. Hide was not only going to fight the hometown athlete, but a more experienced fighter with world class trainers in his corner.

Hide kept composed through out the fight controlling each round with his powerful cut kicks to nullify the lethal punching combinations of Fuss. Hide took some powerful shots as round one opened, which was not a surprise from a fighter of Fuss' caliber. It might of been the three punch combination to the head or a few stiff jabs to the nose, but something awoke in Hide. The training took over and every time Hide was caught with a strike he would have an answer. Hide's clinch proved to be stronger than Fuss Hide's experience with Judo and Muay Thai training really showed off his skills in the clinch. The third round began with Fuss coming out hard and throwing combination after combination. For over 30 seconds Fuss was landing powerful shots on Hide. This was looking like the end of Hide's comeback fight. Hide would not give up and answered the flurry by Fuss by finishing the round with powerful hand combinations and a heavy cut kick that would have crippled any lesser opponent.

After the fight was done the two warriors stood awaiting the final results. Judge 1 scored the bout 30 to 27 for Hide. Judge 2 scored the bout 29 to 28 Fuss. Judge 3 scored the bout 30 to 27 for the winner by split decision...
